Although areas in public health such as having access and cost still pose a great problem, community based care has made an impact on the contemporary practice of nursing. One of the leaders of public health nursing was Lilian D. Wald. Lilian Wald was a nurse, social reformer, and advocate that made a significant impact on public health services. Dieckmann (2015), explains that she convinced American Red Cross to initiate health nursing services across the country. Eventually, this progressed into local governments to develop public health nursing within the counties and their health departments (Dieckmann, 2015). All these developments then supported a service called Town and Country Nursing that developed a framework of home nursing care in the public area and provided ins tructions to the community on hygiene and sanitation (Dieckmann, 2015). Memoir for My Mother Essay This year, as the holidays are beginning to come upon us, Brenda Najera is reminded of what she misses most. Brenda Najera, my mother, is a strong headed, loving, smart woman in her mid-forties. Brenda stands about 55  , has bright blue eyes, and long, straight blonde hair, always done up in those big Texas curls.   And, my mom is never without a full face of makeup. Brenda is also a heavier set woman due to her long, hard work in the office and family events that revolved around whatever amazing menu she had planned for her large family. Her life has always been about family and being there for every important event, from a birthday to a holiday and even a straight A   report card from one of her three children or five grandchildren. In 2010 that all changed; she had to move 1000 miles away from her family and friends from Euless, Texas to Moab, Utah. The recession had my employer near a shutdown and even though I had applied for hundreds of positions in the area I wasnt getting any responses   says Brenda. Out of the blue, a recruiter contacted me and I started the interviewing process for a position out of state. The company had double digit growth, no debt, and the offer to join their company was a raise in pay. And, they covered my relocation, so I felt I had no choice.   Brenda and her husband made the hard move in January to take the position with The Synergy Company, which produces organic supplements for lifelong wellness (The Synergy Company). She became their Director of Procurement. Moab, Utah, home to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, is surrounded by some of the most stunning red rock landscapes on Earth. Moabs unique combination of small resort town hospitality, beautiful scenery and the cool waters of the Colorado River have made it one of the most sought after destinations in the southwest (City of Moab). Although she has relocated to a beautiful place that she loves Najera states I miss all of the opportunities to explore cultures, attending regional events and activities, and most of all the vast opportunities that are found in large cities such as Dallas.   Najera adds Most of all I miss my family; my mother, my children, and my grandchildren as well as my friends. Holidays are the biggest time in Brendas life when she misses home  the most. Shes led me to believe that it is the hardest part of moving that she has had to deal with. Every year when the holidays roll around she wants nothing more than to relocate back to Texas where she can be with her family for all of the holidays, events, and special times where new memories are being made. When asked what she misses most, it is family. Holidays are about sharing time with one another; its about reminiscing about holiday past and making new memories. Not actually being there means you are being left out of the new memories your parents, your children, and your grandchildren will be making, which is nothing less of heartbreaking,  Brenda stated. When she cant be there shes sure to let her family know that her heart is there with them and how she wishes she could be with them on that special day. In the past three years since her move she has always managed, along with her husband, to make the drive to Dallas to spend the Christmas holidays with family. Those months leading to Christmas are still an emotional struggle for Najera as she tries to fill the void of not getting to shop with her daughters or be there to participate in the wish list   making of her grandchildren. Brenda says, I try and surround myself with new friends and their families, which many times doesnt actually fill the void; it instead makes it worse. According to the concept of natural selection, a population of organisms can change over a period time as a result of individuals with certain heritable traits leaving more offspring than other individuals. The resulting increase in the proportion of reproductively successful individuals usually enhances the adaptation of the population to its environment. Natural selection thus tends to promote adaptation by maintaining favorable adaptations in a constant environment or improving adaptation in a direction appropriate to environmental changes (Campbell, 1999). Genesis 1 tells us that God created various kinds of organisms according to their kinds (Genesis 1:11, 12, 21,24, 25). All of these kinds were created with a vast amount of information, enough for their descendants to adopt to various changes in the environment (Sarfati, 1999). This explains the great variety of species that are alive today. Recently, I have been wondering if the earth really is old, and if God did in fact used evolution to create living species. A desire to find out the truth led me to extensively research evolution. Evolution refers to the processes that have transformed life on earth from its earliest forms to the vast diversity that characterizes it today. In his book The Origins of Species Darwin points to the evidence that species were not created in their present forms but had evolved from their ancestors. Darwin also proposes a mechanism for evolution ? natural selection ? a process described earlier (Campbell, 1999). According to the theory of evolution, non-living chemicals organized themselves into a self-reproducing organisms over billions of years. Evolution also tells us that mutations are the source of new genetic information in populations gene pool (Sarfati, 1999). There is a lot of evidence for evolution. Paleontologists have discovered many transitional forms that are said to link older fossils to modern species. A series of fossils have been said to show, for example, that whales evolved from terrestrial ancestors (Campbell,1999). The studies of comparative biology, comparative embryology, genetics, and other sciences also seem to point to evolution. For example, many species today share homologous structures: the forelimbs of all mammals have the same skeletal composition. Also, closely related organisms have similar stages in their development. Another important evidence for evolution is the common genetic code for all organisms (Campbell,1999). Despite all this evidence some scientists are still uncertain whether or not evolution took place. Some people today find major problems in the concept of evolution. There are many reasons why the theory of evolution is being questioned today. The criticism against evolution has come mainly from a lack of fossil evidence ? the absence of transitional forms. According to Wright (1989), one of the most extraordinary examples of discontinuity is the so-called Cambrian explosion, the appearance of representatives of all major marine invertebrate phyla in the earliest sedimentary fossil-bearing rock as well as a variety of other that have not left descendants. Wright also says that explanations offered for the lack of fossils prior to the Cambrian are to date not very satisfactory (Wright, 1989). Even theistic evolutionist Ivan Zabilka (1992) points that as much as 50 percent of all fossil finds are improperly located and can contribute little to evolutionary chronology. In recent years, however, there have been many discoveries, one of which was a discovery of Ediocarian geological pe riod (Precambrian). According to Stephen Jay Gould, evolutionist, (1998),the first phase of the Cambrian, called Manakayan and lasting from 543 to 530 million years ago, features primarily a confusing set of spines, plates, and other bits and pieces called (even in our technical literature) the SSF, or small shelly fossils. The next two phases of the Cambrian (called Tommotian and Atdabanian and ranging from 530 to about 520 million years ago) mark the strangest, most important, and most intriguing of all episodes in the fossil record of animalsthe short interval known as the Cambrian explosion and featuring the first appearance of all animal phyla with skeletons subject to easy preservation in the fossil record.From the information above we learn that the lack of fossil discoveries for the Precambrian period is explained by the jellylike structure of the species at that time, and for this reason few became fossilized. This observation again led me to question evolution. After extensive research on theistic evolutionism and biblical creationism, I have concluded that it seems to be evidence in favor of evolution, yet there is still some reasonable evidence against it. At this point, I believe that God could have used natural processes to create a diversity of species we have today. Based on the evidence, I believe there is a possibility that He used evolution to create some species. Throughout the Bible we can see that God created by His Word and wisdom. Second Peter 2:5, for example, states that long ago by Gods word the heavens existed and the earth was formed. Wright puts it in this way, creation by Gods Word is one image used throughout the Bible, and it indicates Gods absolute authority over creation. Creation by wisdom, another biblical image, speaks of purpose ? the fulfillment of Gods intentions toward thee development of the created order (Wright, 1989). Its easy to notice the emphasis of the author to the goodness of Gods creation. After creation the Bible says that when God looked at His creation he said, behold it very good (Genesis 1:31). This tells us that God takes pleasure in His creation. The Bible also points out that God sustains His creation. In conclusion, I can say that the Lord is the source for every life on earth. He created the earth and everything on it by His Word, and may have used evolution to do so. "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" by Flannery O'Connor "A Good Man Is Hard To Find," by Flannery O'Connor, presents many topics that can be discussed and debated. Christianity is one of the main topics that influence this paper and its meaning. The exploration for the meaning of the Christian faith is continuous throughout O'Connor's paper. Christianity is filled with sin and punishment, good and evil, belief and unbelief, but grandmother fully tells her opinion as she tries to convince "The Misfit" that he is a good Christian man before he kills her. Foreshadowing, personification, and the meaning of religion are all main points effecting the reader as they interpret this story. Foreshadowing is one of the most prominent elements of speech throughout the story. Grandmother says, in the beginning of the story, "I wouldn't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn't answer to my conscience if I did" (O'Connor 1063). This is only the beginning of grandma's ironic statements that later come true with an eerie frequency. Grandmother seems not to want to go on the trip, but the next morning is the first out to the car, ready to go. The quotation above demonstrates how the grandmother has absolutely no control over the family. She truly thinks that what she says will sway the decision of the true decision-maker, Bailey. As the story continues to develop, grandmother becomes more hypocritical. Grandmother says, "In my time, children were more respectful of their native states and their parents and everything else. People did right then. Oh look at the cute little pickaninny!" (O'Connor 1065) This quote illustrates what a hypo crite grandmother really has become. She is scolding her kids to be more respectable and then all the sudden sees a black boy and makes fun of him. The foreshadowing continues as the grandmother speaks up again to ask the question, "Yes and what would you do if this fellow, The Misfit, caught you?" (O'Connor 1064) She has no idea how true this statement will become in just a few short hours. Everything that grandmother says early on in the story, in someway, comes true later on in the story. It's almost like God is listening to every word that grandmother says and makes it come true. Also, one of the most ironic happenings in the story is when each time a number becomes relevant to the story, it always happens to be five or six. This is also the number of people in the family. The grandmother never had a more true statement then when she described the plantation from "Gone with the Wind" (O'Connor 1065). Another on of the most prevalent figures of speech throughout the story is personification. Everything throughout the story is personified. The most commonly personified item is trees. "All at once they would be on a hill, looking down over the blue tops of the tress for miles around, then the next minute, they would be in a red depression with the dust-covered trees looking down on them" (O'Connor 1068). The trees are looking over the family. It's almost like God is looking over the family himself. God realizes that this family must be punished somehow for not realizing that he is their Supreme Being. Throughout the story, trees are personified while surrounding the family. The most ironic part of O'Connor's personification of the trees is the final killing spot of the whole family is "the trees." I think the trees are reminiscent of God's children. The whole family, except grandmother, is killed among the trees. All the killings are among God's children. O'Connor is trying to make us realize that no matter what we do in life, we are among God and his children. Christianity is laced throughout the whole story. Almost every figure of speech, action, or quote from the story is laced with influence by some form of religion. The grandmother is described as a perfect, almost God-like figure.
